Central AC or Ductless: What’s Right for Philadelphia Properties?
This is the most common question we hear from Philadelphia homeowners, and the honest answer depends entirely on your property type and existing infrastructure.
Central AC Makes the Most Sense When:
Your Philadelphia home already has functional ductwork from an existing forced air heating system. Row homes and twins in South Philadelphia, West Philadelphia, and Northeast Philadelphia built after the 1960s often have duct systems that support central AC at lower cost than starting from scratch. A central system delivers consistent whole-home cooling and is typically the more cost-effective path when the infrastructure is already in place.
Ductless Mini-Splits Make the Most Sense When:
Your home has no existing ductwork, features a historic layout where running new ducts would require significant structural work, or you need independent temperature control in specific rooms. Older Philadelphia properties in Germantown, Manayunk, and Fishtown frequently fall into this category. CHF Mechanical's ductless heat pump specialists handle both installation and ongoing service throughout Philadelphia.
How We Help You Decide:
We visit your Philadelphia property before recommending anything. We inspect existing ductwork, measure square footage, check electrical panel capacity, and assess your layout. That drives our recommendation -- the same expert AC installation process we follow on every Philadelphia job.
What to Expect on AC Installation Day
Philadelphia homes often need extra planning before AC installation, especially when dealing with compact rowhomes, aging electrical panels, and L&I permit requirements.
Equipment Arrival and Setup: Our technicians arrive with equipment and tools staged for your specific Philadelphia property. We protect floors and work areas, coordinate access through narrow row home corridors where needed, and safely remove the existing system if this is a replacement job.
Installation and Connections: We install the new outdoor condenser unit on a properly leveled pad or rooftop platform, connect refrigerant lines, install or replace the indoor air handler, and run all electrical connections to your panel. For Philadelphia properties with older 100-amp panels, we identify any electrical upgrades needed before installation day.
Startup and Testing: Once connected, we charge the system with refrigerant, verify pressures, test all electrical components, confirm airflow through every supply and return vent, and run a complete cooling cycle. We do not call a job done until the system holds temperature within manufacturer specifications.
Walkthrough and Documentation: We walk through the finished installation with you, show you how to operate the new thermostat, explain filter maintenance, and hand over all warranty documentation. Every CHF Philadelphia installation includes our one-year maintenance plan and access to our HVAC saving maintenance program for ongoing seasonal coverage.
